She said that harassment is not only limited to being sexual, but can be of any form. “If someone constantly asks you out for tea, it is also a kind of harassment,” she said.
She said that there should be a harassment committee in every institution and CCTV cameras should be installed everywhere at an office.
The ombudsperson said that her institution is not only for women but for men as well, as they can bring their complaints too regarding harassment.
What is Harassment ?
“Harassment covers a wide range of behaviors of an abusive nature. It is commonly understood as behavior that demeans, humiliates or embarrasses a person, and it is characteristically identified by its unlikelihood in terms of social and moral reasonableness.”
In easy words harassment is an act (sexual or non sexual) performed over and over again to such an extent that the other person feels insulted or discomfort.
There can be many types of harassment at work, including but not limited to behavior, conduct, words, comments or actions regarding race, age, gender, skin color, ethnicity, national origin, or any other protected characteristic. Generally, these actions or words are considered unlawful when they create a hostile work environment or create an uncomfortable atmosphere for the affected employee.
